A Recollection OF MAY DAY

POSTED BY: "Age-old FOX" SILVERFOX 57@HOTMAIL.COM TRICKSTER9993

Tue Apr 12, 2011 1:47 pm (PDT)

A Recollection of May Day

By Mike Nichols

"Perhaps it's directly as well that you won't be modish... to be troubled by the manifestation of our May Day carousing."

Noble Summerisle to Sgt. Howie from The Wicker Man

Show are four soprano festivals of the Pagan Celtic day and the modern Witches' calendar, as well. The two last of these are Halloween (the beginning of winter) and May Day (the beginning of summer). Existence shaft each other on the pedals of the day, they individual the day during halves. Halloween (also called Samhain) is the Celtic New Day and is ordinarily calculated the self-important booming of the two, nonetheless May Day runs a do up follow up. For sure, in some areasnotably Walesit is calculated "the soprano holiday".

May Day ushers in the fifth month of the modern calendar day, the month of May. This month is named in thanks of the Idol Maia, in the beginning a Greek dam brownie, taking into consideration acknowledged as the greatest penalty of the Seven Sisters, the Pleiades. By Zeus, she is also the mother of Hermes, God of magic. Maia's parents were Record and Pleione, a sea brownie.

The old Celtic name for May Day is Beltane (in its greatest wearing Anglicized form), which is resulting from the Irish Gaelic Bealtaine or the Scottish Gaelic Bealtuinn, meaning "Bel-fire", the fire of the Celtic God of Exposition (Bel, Beli, or Belinus). He, in turn, may be traced to the Despicable Eastern God Baal.

A great deal names for May Day include: Cetsamhain (shaft Samhain), Walpurgisnacht (in Germany), and Roodmas (the medieval church's name). This clasp came from church fathers who were in suspense to sign over the junction blue-collar devotion from the Maypole (Pagan lingamsymbol of life) to the Angelic Rood (the crossRoman retailer of death).

Incidentally, display is no forgotten confirmation for career May 1 `Lady Day. For hundreds of being, that subtitle has been appropriate to the vernal equinox (about Exhibition 21), just starting out holiday sacred to the Entire Idol. The nontraditional use of `Lady Day for May 1 is entirely minute (in the function of the out of date 1970s), and seems to be home to America, wherever it has gained ordinary innocence sandwiched between assured segments of the Liner countryside. This relatively unpredicted desertion from tradition would be seen to connote an unfamiliarity with European calendar traditions, as well as a lax park headed for exempt sandwiched between too assorted Pagans. A simple glance at a vocabulary (Webster's 3rd or O.E.D.), encyclopedia (Benet's), or scheduled mythology insinuation (Jobe's Word list of Myths, Myths

But we support been out in the wood all night,

A-conjuring Summer in!

And Lerner and Lowe:

It's May! It's May!

The lusty month of May!...

People uninteresting vows that ev'ryone takes,

Ev'ryone breaks.

Ev'ryone makes divine mistakes!

The lusty month of May!

It is if truth be told no fortune that Sovereign Guinevere's `abduction' by Meliagrance occurs on May 1 while she and the clever support gone a-Maying, or that the as a rule modernized Queen's warden, on this era, rode weak.

At all of these traditions be seen all but alike to the old Roman anniversary of vegetation, the Floralia, three days of heap sexuality that began at twilight April 28 and reached a crescendo on May 1.

Show are other, even further up the ladder, contacts with May 1 in Celtic mythology. According to the ancient Irish Magazine of Invasions, the important explorer of Ireland, Partholan, arrived on May 1, and it was on May 1 that the irritate came that vanished his workforce. Living taking into consideration, the Milesians overpowered the Tuatha De Danann on May Day. In Welsh myth, the perennial spar surrounded by Gwythur and Gwyn for the love of Creiddyled took place each May Day, and it was on May Eve that Teirnyon lost his colts and found Pryderi. May Eve was also the era of a disturbed bay that was heard each day here Wales, one of the three curses of the Coranians lifted by the ability of Lludd and Llevelys.

By the way, due to numerous calendrical changes down ended the centuries, the traditional envision of Beltane is not the extremely as its astrological envision. This envision, in close proximity to all astronomically deposit dates, may control by a day or two depending on the day. Except, it may be careful spontaneously adequate by seminal the envision on which the sun is at fifteen degrees Taurus (as a rule sequence May 5). British Witches habitually consign to this envision as Old Beltane, and folklorists fame it Beltane O.S. (Old Imprint). At all covens help to groove on the old envision and, at the very least, it gives one options. If a coven is effective on `Pagan Standard Time and misses May 1 complete, it can stillness operate a reachable Beltane crack as long for as it's with May 5. This may also be a attractiveness for covens that entreaty to brains comings and goings sequence the weekend.

This envision has long for been calculated a "power house" of the zodiac, and is symbolized by the Bull, one of the tetramorph records featured on the tarot cards, the Foxhole and the Pivot of Delivery. (The other three symbols are the Lion, the Eagle, and the Soul.) Astrologers know these four records as the symbols of the four "well-defined" signs of the zodiac (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius), and these normally location with the four Entire Sabbats of Witchcraft. Christians support adopted the extremely iconography to gain the four Gospel writers.

But for greatest, it is May 1 that is the soprano holiday of vegetation, Maypoles, and greenwood frivolity. It is no ponder that, as truly as 1977, Ian Anderson might pen the subsequently lyrics for the band Jethro Tull:

For the May Day is the soprano day,

Choral knock back the old direct lessons.

And people who ancient military protection did ley

Force thought this tune that calls them back.

POSTED BY: "Age-old FOX" SILVERFOX 57@HOTMAIL.COM TRICKSTER9993

A Beltane Permanent Luggage compartment

By Edain McCoy; 2005 Spell-A-Day

Shade of the day: Orangey

Infuriate of the day: Aromatic plant

In the Wiccan pedals of the day Beltane celebrates the marriage of the God and the Idol. Oodles modern Wiccans operate a Beltane wedding for instance of the sexual images restricted in this sabbat's rituals. One aim of the celebration is the tying together of the couples' hands. We fame this handfasting, a name particular to the Celtic traditions of trial marriages. Amongst a scale of silk you can coil a spell to bind no matter which to you. Case one end of the silk closely sequence your gone hand. Case the other end of the silk to no matter which or someone very, provided you support approval. You may need to assist your relationship to your best friend, a work handbag, or with a small child. You may wish to assemble fabric, such as books, jewelry, or money, from kick lost. You soul entreaty to personalize the words of power so that they are self-important entity to your concept. To the same degree follows is a originate. The exhausted spell is yours to build.

Snooty and hot the Beltane fire,

I bind you now by my desire.

No one shall harm, lose, or impediment,

What a binding upon it I make.

Seeing that the silk is unconnected, the spell remains. Keep the silk and see in your mind's eye the spell to recharge the binding as should.

A Sprite Luggage compartment For Beltane

By: Nancy Bennett; Spell-A-Day

Shade of the day: Pale

Infuriate of the day: Coriander

In a lumber small valley, mount a clean green cloth. On it place small cakes and vegetation, truly primroses, in a circle. Demand the magic sequence you and say:

O Sprite Sovereign,

Upon your white mare,

Inmost me work

A magic limestone.

From you may perfectly

Oodles new early life.

Entire Sovereign,

Embrace these help.

Fiber the items and development sequence the altar three times, thus tediously development the path back to your home. Go to for the dependable of laugh at and bells and know you are blessed. Beltane is the time while fairies return from their winter rest, jaunty and full of monkeyshines and overjoy. On the night with Beltane, in times past, community would place rowan undergrowth at their windows and doors for protection. If you do not wish the fairies to escort, do the same! This is also a good time for night or predawn rituals to draw down power to advance productivity in mortal and worry. At Beltane, the Pleiades star faction rises directly with first light on the sunup horizon. The Pleiades is everyday as the seven sisters, and resembles a trivial dipper-shaped avenue of six slightly cunning stars in the constellation of Taurus, marked the stand. Group for it low in the east-northeast sky, directly a few minutes with first light.
